We sprung forward on Sunday and lost an hour of sleep, and I’m definitely still feeling the effects. The average adult needs 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Allowing yourself a good rest each night is essential; it directly impacts your mental and physical health. Check out these wearables and apps that can help you get a better night’s sleep.

Fitbit wearables have a ton of great features for analyzing how you sleep each night. With auto sleep track, you don’t have to do anything to begin tracking; the wearable knows when you’ve fallen asleep and begins its magic. The next morning, check the app to see a chart of your sleep stage hour by hour. There’s features that help you create a personalized routine based on your goals, trends, and wake up time. Having a consistent sleep schedule leads to better sleep quality.

You Don’t Snooze, You Lose

Try out these quick tips to improve your sleep quality.

  • Reduce blue light exposure in the evening -your body associates blue light with daytime. Too much blue light can cause eye strain and even retina damage.
    • You can do this by getting glasses with special lens to block the blue light from your laptop and computer.
    • Enable night mode on your phone, even if it’s not night.
    • Programs like f.lux block blue light on both your phone and laptop. Plus, f.lux is free!

  • The app Sleep Stream is an advanced sleep inducer and relaxation aid. We’ve all heard of sound machines that play white noise, but that’s nothing compared to the extreme customization of Sleep Stream. Layer sounds and incorporate special binaural beats that stimulate brain activity associated with relaxation and sleep.
  • Smart speakers like Google Home and Amazon Alexa play soothing sounds. Say something like, “Hey Google, please play thunderstorm sounds for an hour.”
  • The whole reason why I wrote this blog is because I wanted to talk about my weighted blanket. I’m obsessed. It feels like you’re snuggled in a warm, cozy embrace all night long. Though not completely proven by science, weighted blankets minimize tossing and turning at night, making you feel better rested. I’m definitely #TeamWeightedBlanket.
