Have you ever wondered what your heart rate is when you’re sitting on your living room couch? Or maybe you’ve wondered about how many steps you’ve taken today. The days of just idly wondering are past. Amazon has recently announced that the Amazon Echo is now able to work in conjunction with your Fitbit.
To understand what this new partnership means, we have to first understand the high-tech features of the Amazon Echo.
Debuting in 2013, the Amazon Echo hasn’t been around for too long. But it’s awesome factor revolves around how simple it is to use and get used to. For one, it’s easy for Echo to hear and understand you, because it has seven microphones and beam-forming technology. It can hear you from across a long room.
How does the Echo know what you want? Well, you pick from “Amazon”, “Alexa”, or “Echo” as your home service computer’s wake word, and it will respond immediately.
“Alexa, what is my heart rate?”
So, with one wake word and very little effort, you can order an Uber car to pick you up, you can order a pizza for delivery, you can have it play you an audiobook or music, you can even connect it to your home’s thermostat and other home devices. Echo can connect to the Alexa Voice Service to play music, provide information, news, sports scores, weather, and more—instantly. All you have to do is ask.
And with the new Fitbit and Echo partnership, all you have to do is ask Alexa for activity data from any day within the previous week – like sleep data, active minutes logged, calories burned, number of steps taken, and more. Alexa will also give you encouragement every once in a while, like “try to take a walk today, but don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.”
Tim Roberts, the Executive Vice President of Fitbit, couldn’t contain his excitement at the possibilities of what this new friendship could bring. What if Alexa could prepare us for a better night’s sleep based off of our health activity of that day?
